DHL employees pledge to help underprivileged children by joining World Vision's '30-Hour Famine Camp'
DHL, the world's leading express and logistics company, has supported, for the ninth consecutive year, World Vision’s '30-Hour Famine Camp' that aims to turn the focus on global hunger. As one of the key initiatives of the company's corporate sustainability program, over 80 DHL colleagues, families and friends will once again volunteer to fast barefoot at the Hong Kong Aberdeen Sports Ground, aiming to raise awareness and funds for children suffering from starvation worldwide.
DHL has been the main sponsor of World Vision's 30-Hour Famine Camp since 2000 and this year four corporate teams will join nearly 5,000 participants on 19-20 April 2008 to raise funds for World Vision's food aid and development project, now in its 25th year. This year, the funds raised from the campaign will go towards the Agricultural Recovery Project in Lesotho, Animals Breeding Project in Laos and Emergency Nutrition Project in Sudan.
With the company support, three DHL Famine Ambassadors went the extra mile by joining the famine trip to Laos in February 2008 to experience first-hand the lives of underprivileged children and families, and deliver a message of care along with 'Famine Star' Gigi Leung, 'World Vision Child Sponsor' Sammi Cheng and other ambassadors. After returning from the trip, DHL's Famine Ambassadors also shared their profound and memorable experience with colleagues and the community, motivating others to join the 'life-saving' league for world hunger.
"By supporting World Vision's Famine Campaign, DHL hopes to be able to build a better world for needy children in developing countries and, most importantly, to inspire action among people in Hong Kong to lend a helping hand to those in need," said Connie Tang, General Manager of DHL Express Hong Kong. "We are particularly proud of our compassionate employees who have demonstrated their true enthusiasm for helping the underprivileged children, and have played a key role in mobilizing the people around them to support this meaningful cause. With our strong culture of corporate volunteerism, DHL will continue to work with those in need and further our commitment as a responsible corporate citizen."
"This year is the 25th anniversary of the 30-Hour Famine since its introduction in 1984. We are very grateful to DHL, our principal sponsor, for its unfailing support of this meaningful event since 2000," said Mr Kevin Chiu, Chief Executive Officer of World Vision Hong Kong.
"In response to the call for 'Famine Heroes', DHL has sent 3 staff to join our recent visit to Loas to experience first-hand the people's distressing living condition and witness food shortage problem faced by the children, with a view to mobilising more people to join in this life-saving endeavour. Moreover, over 80 staff, families and friends from DHL will participate in this year's 30-Hour Famine to show their care and concern for the poor, and to halt and reduce the daily death toll of 17,000 children caused by hunger. We are extremely delighted to have an enthusiastic partner like DHL in this caring ministry," expressed Mr Chiu.
Last year, the campaign raised a total of HK$15 million. DHL’s continued support of 30-Hour Famine Camp is part of its corporate responsibility strategy that aims to enhance and connect the interest of employees, the community and the environment.
